Software Tools
Several software tools are licensed by the school to support various curriculum needs.
These include:
- Mathletics: Web-based Math program that can be used in class or from home. In Summer 2010, many students were asked to do a set curriculum over the course of the summer to stay fresh on their math skills.
- Math Visual Manipulatives: A new math visual manipulatives program was rolled out this fall that can be used by all grades. Using the smart boards, teachers can present abstract concepts using virtual manipulatives that the children can interact with on-screen. For example, second graders are learning how to count money using coin manipulatives on the Smart Board. Other skills available for all grades include Base 10 counting, number line use, fractions, and algebra mechanics.
- Accelerated Reader: Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading management software program which provides teachers with an effective way to monitor all forms of guided reading practice. AR is currently used in grades 1 through 8 at St. Matthew Catholic School. Learn more »
- Text Online Tools: Many of the school's text book series come with accompanying software tools for teaching. The Math text comes with various tools.
A new language arts program has been rolled out for grades K - 4. Not only does it include new texts and workbooks, but also offers interactive online learning tools. For example, the new reading series website enables interactive practice of vocabulary from each story, grammar drills, reading concepts, and eventually an e-book on line. Eventually, the reading text will be available to access at home eliminating the need to carry the book back and forth. - Google for Kids is specifically, SafeSearch for Kids powered by the Google search engine. It provides a filtered search engine capability to prevent access to adult sites and content. GoGooligans.com is another search engine for kids and teens.
- KidPix has been part of the computer curriculum for years here. Mrs. Uliana says:
"For me, I see it as a younger version of Word or Works where you can have text then add pictures."The students are able to draw with it using various tools such as pencil drawing, paints, stamps and shapes. They can insert text and add sounds as well as make a slide show. KidPix helps students in almost every subject, including Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science and Art.
