General Information:
The kindergarten curriculum is an integrated one in which children will engage in developmentally appropriate activities with an overall goal of emergent literacy. Children will work individually, in small groups, and as a whole class as they strive to internalize and master skills and content necessary for present and future spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional, and physical growth.
Philosophy:
We have a somewhat diverse program in that we employ methodologies and follow theories associated with different schools of thought. We are developmental in that we fully believe that, at this age, children vary greatly. Thus, we realize that different children may achieve different things at different times, and our goal is growth. We have an academic program that believes minimum competencies must be achieved for success in first grade. We use some Montessori materials when they enhance our study. We strive to provide many types of lessons for everything we teach in an attempt to address the needs of all types of learners with all types of intelligence. Because it is appropriate at this level, we always begin concrete and move to the abstract.
Curriculum:
Children receive instruction in the Catholic faith, reading readiness (including phonics and whole language), mathematics, science, social studies, art, motor skills, music, physical education, and Spanish. Specialists teach P.E., music, and Spanish in Kindergarten, but these are integrated into other subjects as well.
The Archdiocesan Guidelines and the California State Framework prescribe our curriculum.
The PEARL (schoolwide learning expectations) drive all instruction.
Parent Involvement
We need parents to be actively involved both in and out of the classroom. First and foremost, parent involvement means making sure the family prays together and attends Sunday Mass on a weekly basis. Extensive academic support by parents is the expectation. Kindergartners need supervision while doing their homework, and we also ask parents to regularly review what we are learning in class. In addition, we do ask for help in the classroom during Free Choice time and Station time, as well as escorting the class to PE.
