Edwin ("Ned") BarkerWent to Serra for 2 years, then to the seminary, ordained in 1959, MSW from Cal 1962, worked for Catholic Social Services and Catholic Charities until I married Mary in 1975. We moved to Oregon in 1993 and both worked for the local hospice - she as a volunteer and I in social work and spiritual care. Mary died in June 2005 after 30 years of a happy marriage. I continue to do some work for hospice. Last Spring I had a wonderful trip to Vietnam for 3 weeks on a tour led by Tom Fox, former editor and publisher of National Catholic Reporter. I liked it so much I may go back again next year! I am grateful for my good education at St. Matthew's from Sisters Clara, Hyacintha, Antonius, Agnes Lucille, Agatha, Vincent de Paul, and Elizabeth Marie, which prepared me well for all my future education. I'm happy to know that Fr. Tony McGuire, whom I knew in the seminary and whom I have always admired, is now the Pastor in my old home parish!
Class of 1951
Dennis KavanaghI started kindergarten in Sept. 1941 and then 2 months later Pearl Harbor. I recall the 1st day of K and most of Dec. 7, 1941. In 1951 when I graduated the Korean War was in full swing. All nun teachers except the 4th grade. Sister Rosary in the 8th & Sister Ester Marie in the 7th. On to Serra with most of the boys in our class. Graduated in 1955 and onto Cal. BS in Pol. Sci. in 1959 and LLB from Boalt Hall Law School at Cal in 1962. Retired in 1996. I was a lobbyist in Sacramento from 1963 to 1981 and thereafter practiced law in San Francisco. Will be married to Barbara Beal of St. Catherine's and Burlingame High 50 years in '07. Three sons and 2 granddaughters. We have lived in Marin County since 1963. I still own the family home on So. Grant in San Mateo. I keep in touch with Jim Jackson in Santa Cruz area on a regular basis. I was saddened by the recent death of Pete Chanteloup. Note to Carolyn Lyon Gustafson: Great you are on the alum com. The Serra alum directory is up to date and is a good source for current addresses. I believe San Mateo High has an active alum assoc and would be a source. In our '51 class Harold Brizzolara, Wackerman and one other went to SM Hi. Harold B. lives in OK. Google the rest or national telephone directory on the net. Serra of '55 had a 50th reunion last year & there was a good turnout for those still with us. Denny Kavanagh
Class of 1953
Dennis BennettWas looking at the St Matt's website and see a number of ex-St. Matt's alumni have written but we don't have a representative of 1953. Well we are about to have a 8th grade reunion of the 1953 class on June 30th at St Matthews and we are getting a remarkable response.
Myself, I went on to CSM and the to S.F. State and then joined with my dad in business. We had concessions ( insurance counters, business centers and gift shops in airports around the U.S. 78 airports in all ) as well as a travel agency in Burlingame.
In 1962 grounded United flight attendant Vicki Crossan and married. Moved to Hawaii in 1962 to manage our operation there (Wiki Wiki buss operation on the airport and gift shops in the lobby and a travel agency in Waikiki). Returned to the mainland at the end of the 60's. Have lived in Belmont and San Carlos since. Some of you may remember my mom who used to act as the taxi service for the nuns. She is still alive and at 94 finally got her out from behind the wheel of her car. She still communicates with several nuns who taught at St. Matt's.
Vicki and I have three Kikis, two sons and a daughter and we have eight grandchildren.
Class of 1954
Joyce McLaughlin Berghoff(It's kind of scary to see the class of '54 toward the top of the alumni list...we just can't be that old, can we?)
I live in San Mateo and work at the College of San Mateo, in charge of facilities rental and event planning. Until I was widowed in 2003, I enjoyed a great marriage of forty years to my wonderful husband, Larry Berghoff. Our three children, (all graduates of Saint Matthews) Eric '78, Roe '82 and Joel '84, have provided me with six delightful grandchildren. I received a great education at Saint Matthews, but must admit that I think I enjoyed my children's years there even more (Parent dances, baseball, softball and basketball games, track meets, cheerleading, carnivals, etc., etc.). Our family made many wonderful friends during our years at Saint Matthews! My husband and I attended our daughter's 20 year reunion from St. Matts in 2002 as 'room parents' (they no longer need chaperones!). It was great fun, and somewhat strange socializing with these 'kids'!
Class of 1954

Clare Hardy MullinSheer delight to hear about St. Matthews. So many wonderful memories - lived "up St. Johns alley" at corner of Harvard/Sanora from 6th grade. Before that, lived on Palm Ave in old Krutchnut estate home. Vividly remember pleated skirts & white sailor tops with tie. Loved art lessons in kindergarten in old home before the new wing was built. Remember May Day processions through gardens in pretty white dresses and bringing roses to decorate classroom. Still have tiny coin purse. About 4th grade, one nun held dance class that was fun. I was only girl in eight grade who took ballroom classes down town but was told to stop. Was told "not nice to dance with boys so young". The nuns were so careful to help us develop morals and values. Their angelic faces framed in a white halo gave an image of strict respect. Graduated 1954.
Attended Mercy High School in Burlingame and first year they had a bus to pick us up in San Mateo. Later CSM at Coyote Point and SFO School of Fashion Design. Years later were asked to present my designs at fashion show for mother's club. After asked by nuns to accessorize new their outfits. Too embarrassed to touch their sacred necks so declined. They were so different without a halo. Heat must have been miserable.
Married Boston man, have loving daughter named Elizabeth, and have lived in Sunnyvale home for years but. Continued education over the years. Was involved in theater set & costume design, fashion designer and later politics and banking. Currently writing books, various workshops, success parties and media as producer of local TV show "Colorful Journeys of Success" featuring professionals helping others succeed and host for "Visions Unlimited". Also restored a 1921 in-law cottage in SM.
Have wonderful memories of nuns at St. Matthews and their strict but loving care to guide us in building a solid foundation. We were blessed.
Still attend mass and would love to stay connected with St. Matthews alumni so E-mail me.
Class of 1955
Gary HughesI've been in professional baseball as a scout and front office executive for the past 40 years. To this day I still remember the St. Matthew's varsity team of '55. We were the undefeated PPSL Champions and finished the season 26-1 (I believe). I can still name the team : Don McMullen, Pete Cocconi, John O'Brien, Cliff Bellone, Tim Mahoney, Bob Chanteloup, Enrico Ricci, Jim O'Brien, Ed Ottoboni, Dan Fitzgerald, Pat McGibben, Charlie Wellnitz and Roger Krieger. We were coached by Bill Kiely. We had a memorable year. Sincerely, Gary Hughes '55 SMS
Class of 1955
Donald McMullenI am just 65, my Mom still lives in the home I grew up in down the alley from St. Matthew's. She will be 101 years old in December.
Class of 1956
Sister Helen GilsdorfI am the first of 10 Gilsdorfs to graduate from St. Matt's. The others are Bill, Larry, Ann, Thom, Linda, Judy, Steve, Mary and Eileen. We attended the 50th anniversary of St. Matt's except Larry; Mary and Eileen weren't born yet!
I entered the Sisters of Mercy after four years at Mercy High. My main interest and ministry is music. I have composed an album of liturgical music, "In the Breaking of the Bread" which lately came out in CD format. I currently teach elementary music at St. Peter's in S.F. Our mother died in 1993. Dad at 93 still lives in San Mateo. I am looking forward to composing a song for the 75th anniversary Mass in January, 2007. See you there!
St. Matt's 1950-1958
Denis ViriI didn't actually graduate from St. Matthew's but attended there K-7 from 1950-1958. I am currently a member of the faculty at Arizona State University College of Education, specializing in American Indian Education.
Class of 1961
Kevin BeltonI attended St. Matthews from kindergarten through 8th grade, which took a while, as I was held back somewhere along the way. My older brothers Terry and Barry and my younger sister Maureen also went to St. Matt's. I was not the best student and got into trouble more than once and was marched to the office for various offences, but, despite all this, I was inspired to enter the seminary at St. Anthony's (Franciscan) in Santa Barbara. Once again, I struggled with academics, flunked Latin and was advised to give up on other languages.
I graduated from Serra in '65 and, following advice from counselors there, got a factory job, which bored me to death. SO, I left home and did two years of volunteer lay ministry, serving in Mexicali and then organizing youth groups for YCS. Discarding the advice of my counselors, I got accepted on probation at the University of Portland, where I was a war protester, student body president and activist with the United Farm Workers - and finished at the Universidad de Navarra (Pamplona, Spain).
I did many years of community work in the Hispanic community and among migrant workers in Oregon, Illinois, Indiana and now California, raising 8 kids along the way. Eventually I went into teaching ESL and Spanish and have administered a summer high school for migrant students in Napa Valley. Today I teach at Justin-Siena (Christian Brothers) High School in Napa and at the Napa Valley Adult School. My kids range from 14 to 34. Among them are artists, actors, hippies and outdoor enthusiasts. I am married to a saint and we now have two beauitiful grandkids as well!
I would love to hear from other St. Matt's alums of my era.
Larry Raffo
Larry is married, and lives in Burlingame with his wife, Susan, and they have two grown children. After teaching middle school in Burlingame for 19 years, Larry moved to the Hillsborough City School District as Vice Principal of Crocker Middle School. He was Vice Prinicipal for 3 years, Principal of North Hillsborough School for 3 years and Principal of Crocker School for 6 years. Larry is now beginning his 6th year as the Assistant Superintendent in Hillsborough.

Angela Harrington NortonI still live in the area & my mom's assisted living apartment overlooks the school--St. Matt's remains highly visible in my life. After Notre Dame-Belmont, 2 yrs at Santa Clara Univ. & graduating from Cal-Berkeley, my girlfriends from St. Matt's days are still my dearest friends today. My husband (Serra HS '66) & I just celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary. We took our three sons (& one son's significant other-girlfriend) to Ireland for vacation/golf & to get back in touch with our family's Irish roots. With only our "baby" still in college, our empty nest has afforded us a leisurely & quieter lifestyle of late. Would love to hear from any other "Saints" from Class of 1962.

Leo A. LowensteinI am the oldest of 5, one brother, and 3 sisters, with nieces, and nephews that graduated from St Matt's. I graduated from St Matt's in 1966.
We all live in the Bay Area except for my brother Lenard Lowenstein who lives in Parker, Colorado.
We all live very normal lives despite what they say about a Catholic education. ( only kidding). I recently got married (2002)to my beautiful Bride, and wonderful wife and friend Diane Arceo-Lowenstein.
I am looking forward to the the up and coming events surrounding the 75th Anniversary Celebration.
Class of 1966
Jan McLaughlin ShieldsMy name is Jan(Janice) to those who knew me at St Matt's, (Mclaughlin) Shields and just about my whole family went to St. Matt's. My sister, Joyce (McLaughlin) Berghoff, my brothers Gene and Dennis, and believe it or not almost all my nieces and nephews. The reason I am writing is because my sister sent me this web site, and I noticed that 2 fellow classmates had writen in. I have been happily married for 32 years to the same man. Believe it or not he has put up with me that long. What a saint!!! He graduated for Burlingame High. We met while I was at Mercy Burlingame. We now live in Sacramento and have a 19 year old daughter. By the way I graduated in 1966. Hi to all my old classmates. I use the term "old" in the nicest of ways.
Class of 1975
Patty Fadelli SugarI've been married to Dave Sugar (former teacher/coach at Serra HS)for 20+ years. We live outside of Portland, Oregon, with our dogs and cat (no children). I work at David Douglas High School in the counseling office as a records secretary. I have fond memories of the eight years I spent at St. Matthews. It was a wonderful, academic, athletic, and social environment. I'm thankful that I was able to attend a great school and be a part of such a special place. Go Saints!
Class of 1977
Maureen Sammon FavaAfter leaving St. Matts in 1977 I went on to Mercy High School in Burlingame. I have been married for 21 years to fellow alumni Greg Fava (1974). We have two daughters Nicole 12 and Haley 5 and live in Redwood City.
Class of 1978
Jeff Campodonico, Ph.D.As with most of you, life gets very busy when parenting 2 growing boys. I have good memories of Tom Leonardini's coaching St. Matt's varsity baseball - he was a competitor who instilled a knowledge and positive competitiveness. However, I do recall one game against IHM, St. Timothy's, or the like, where Tom got into a verbal dispute over a petty issue early in the game. Tom was asked by the other coach to "meet me in the parking lot" after the game. Tom replied, "I'll be there". Fortunately, as it turned out, our team won the game and no subsequent meeting between coaches took place. Notwithstanding, I really think Tom Leonardini was a great coach for me at the time. I hope to do the same for my kids.
Class of 1978
Laurene Fava BrazilI have been married for 21 years to Michael. We have two children, Ashley and Kevin. Ashley is a sophomore at UC Davis and Kevin will be a senior at Serra High School. I have run the Serra High School Cafeteria for the last 9 years. It is amazing to me how many people are still in the area and that I run into being at Serra. I am so grateful for St. Matt's for meeting my bestest buddies there and being friends after all these years! And of course we cannot forget "Spirit Festival Hill"!
Class of 1978
Christine Zwierlein RitzoHi everyone! It's been a long time. The last event I attended for St. Matt's was for the 50th reunion when I ran a tennis tourney. That was a lot of fun.
Since then I graduated from USF with a BS in Nursing. I worked a Mills Hospital for a couple of years and then started as a visiting nurse in 1989. I am currently with Sutter Visiting Nurses and Hospice in San Mateo. I've seen a lot of alumni parents, in their homes, along the road to recovery from surgeries and illnesses.
I married my husband Dale in 1988. He is a physician in downtown San Mateo, and takes care of several of our classmates' parents. We have two children- Jack is 15 and a sophomore at Hillsdale High, Mary Kate is 13 and in the eigth grade at St. Gregory's. It was a hard not to send them to St. Matts as they would be the third generation in our family to be there, but St. Greg's is 10 doors away. My father was in the first graduating class to go all the way through grades 1-8, he hated to see the tradition broken.
We moved my mother out of the Zwierlein family home in 2003. My father passed away in '99 and the house was too large for my mother and Mitzi. It was the first time it was sold outside the family in 75 years. My mother, and Mitzi, are well and still live in San Mateo. My other sister, Emily, lives in San Clemente with her family.
For younger alumni who had my sister, Mrs. Vorsatz, as a fifth grade teacher I can let you know she has four children. The oldest will be married in December, she's 27, and the youngest is in seventh grade at Crocker.
Thanks to Anna for updating me about the website and reunion info. I enjoy running into all the old class members now and then. Keep in touch.
Class of 1979
Wendy Robles GeorgeThis will be my last year at St Matt's as my youngest Matthew George will be graduating 8th grade! It has been wonderful having all three of my children attend St Matt's. My oldest, Miriam, St Matt's class of 2002 has graduated from Notre Dame Belmont and is entering UC Davis this September in pursuit of a medical degree. I am very proud of her! Michael, St Matt's class of 2004 is currently a junior at Serra High School. He is looking into colleges already! Matthew, who will be graduating St Matt's in 2007 is excited about high school and hopes to continue his education at Serra High School. As for myself, St Matt's class of 1979, there have been many changes in my life recently but all for the best. I have been blessed with three wonderful children that I am extremely proud of and am surrounded by a community that has been extremely nurturing.

Class of 1980
Kelli Mangini ReillyMy class had a reunion a while back and we met at the St. Matt's gym, and had a great dinner and some fun conversation. My years at St. Matt's, especially 8th grade, will always bring me great memories. Since the reunion, I am still living in Sacramento with my husband Kris, and we have a 5-year-old son named Sam. We found out last year that Sam has autism, which was devastating to us, but he is very high functioning and is doing very well since we started his therapy program. His program consists of outside and home therapy at about 40 hours per week, so that keeps me very busy. I also enjoy making jewelry for friends and family, still do a little singing here and there, and I enjoy writing. I hope to one day write a novel, when time permits. I'm glad that this website is up. Hello to everyone from the class of 1980-- I hope you're all doing well!
Update 7/07
An update on my last post: Since my last post, my son, Sam, has been doing very well. I felt it was important to note that an autism diagnosis does not have to be "devastating." At first it feels that way, but I've come to realize that it's part of who my son is, and I wouldn't want him to be a different child. He does need help in certain areas, but he is a complete joy just as he is. We have cut his therapy hours in half, 20 to 25 hours per week, and he is doing much better with that. My husband and I could not be more proud of our son. =) Hope the old gang from class of '80 is doing well. Hello to you all!
Class of 1982

Debbie Spillane BohanAfter graduating St Matt's in 1982, I attended Notre Dame and then graduated in 1986 from Hillsdale High School. I studied Art and Interior Design at Canada College in Redwood City while working in Kitchen and Bath Sales. After getting married in 1990 and having my first daughter, I moved to Bakersfield in 1994.
Thirteen years later, I am still here! It's a great place to live and raise a family! Memories of San Mateo and St Matthew School are dear to me. My parents still live there and many other relatives which allows us to visit several times a year.
My part time postion as a Mobile Entertainment Manager is great and allows me lots of time with my family. I will be studying soon to obtain a real estate license and plan to re-enter the design field in the near future. I have been active as a Girl Scout Leader for 8 years and also active with school events and church groups.
My children are Jacqueline Powers(14), Meghan (9) and Matthew (4) (yes, we named him after the school!) and of course they are my pride and joy. My husband, Mike Bohan is a wonderful husband and father. In fact today, March 22, we celebrate our 10th anniversary!
After hearing of St Matthew's 75th anniversary, I am very excited to be able to make it! I missed the reunion for the Class 0f '82 because I was overdue with my son the weekend of the party. The other day a wonderful school friend, Kristi, called me gave me all the details of the dinner dance. She even promised to be my "date" for the evening leaving the husbands at home with the kids! I look forward to the festivities and the family picnic on the 29th will be a great way to show the ol' school to my kids and hubby! Hope to reunite with some old familiar faces and swap all those "What have you been up to?" stories!

Susan UgheI just ran into Sister Marcel at Bank of America in downtown San Mateo, and still, after all these years she remembers me, my brother, and little bits of information that even I sometimes forget about! Who would have thought?!
The reason I ran into Sister Marcel was because I was getting change for my new bookstore that I opened in downtown San Mateo! I opened Sacred Paths Bookstore on September 17, 2005. It is a spiritual bookstore that includes holistic, metaphysical, and self-help books and gifts. We cover topics such as World Religions, Yoga, and Feng Shui. We also have special sections for baseball, San Francisco, and children.
Please come visit! We are in downtown San Mateo at 134 South B Street (between 1st and 2nd). To see more about the store, go to http://www.sacredpathsbookstore.com.
