Art in Action
What is the St. Matthew's Art in Action Program?
Art in Action is a program brought to us by our own Mary Downs, second grade teacher. She is the leader of the Art in Action program. We are very lucky to be able to offer our children such a wonderful look at the world of art. It will unlock their creativity and enhance their art knowledge.
Art in Action is teaching children that Art tells a story. Artists tell stories about the world they live in and the places and people they know. Artists tell their stories in many ways. They paint portraits, landscapes, and scenes for their world. They use color to create the mood and to add rhythm to the painting. They use positive and negative space to balance a composition.

Saint Matthew students will have the opportunity to learn about abstract and realist painting. Each lesson begins with an analysis of a masterpiece by an artist like Van Gogh, or Picasso. Students learn to recognize the formal elements of color, line, shape, texture and space. They use the vocabulary of art to evaluate the principals of design, including balance, emphasis and style. Through this program children will be able to build a solid foundation in drawing, painting and sculpture techniques, developing creativity, critical thinking and self expression.
This program is based on the conviction that art education should be a part of every student's academic experience. Art in Action integrates the disciplines of art appreciation, art history and art skills. Students are provided with all of the tools and arts supplies to make their own art objects.
Parents who wish to volunteer at their child's Art in Action sessions should inquire with that class's designated room parent.
Please do take a moment to stop by the office as some of the work from each class is displayed on the walls outside the office. It will amaze you.
